Beautiful Lobotomy got together with Vancouver emcee Inkspill to discuss some of his new projects, acting, and trying not to be a biased bastard.
Beautiful-Lobotomy: You seem to be involved in a lot of projects, fill us in a bit on what you’ve been up to lately
Inkspill: I’m working on 3 albums right now: The first one to drop is “Mur-diddly-urdlers” (MDU) with Azrael. It’s got beats by Mike Decline, Metawon, Ryan Stinson, Dirty Sample, and myself. There are guest appearances by Chadio, Kaboom, Cons, Denzil (POS), Self Taught, Anonymouz, Risskant (from Amsterdam), Ashleigh Eymann and DJ K-Rec on the cuts. I’ve also busy recording my solo album, as well as a mega group project with Mike Decline & Ashleigh Eymann.
When I’m not working on my raps, I focus the bulk of my remaining time on making beats, shooting & editing videos (ie. Ashleigh Eymann – “Footwork” & Cloud City Classic – “Brand New Kicks”), doing as many shows as possible, taking acting classes & drawing.
Beautiful-Lobotomy: Will you be doing a lot of the production on your solo album or will someone else be handling that end of the project?
Inkspill: So far, I’ve recorded tracks over beats by Mike Decline, Metawon, Loophole, David Sadler & myself.
Beautiful-Lobotomy: Being that you work with so many different artists. Is there anyone you’ve worked with lately that you think people are sleepin’ on or is just straight up underrated?
Inkspill: At risk of sounding like a biased bastard, I’d have to say Azrael. I’ve been a fan of his since I first heard Castheadwork in like 2003.
His content, wordplay, cadence and delivery are all ridiculous. Rhyme schemes like “quit the chirpin and the onomatopoeia/ automatically i put a stop to that idea” Puts a grin on my mug. Also, his writing process is bananas. While we were writing MDU, I’d scrawl chicken scratch on loose-leaf sheets while he’d close his eyes and Jay-Z his verses in his head.
Beautiful-Lobotomy: Sounds like we will have to get him on here soon. You said you act. Anything we might have seen ya in?
Inkspill: haha not yet. Gotta get an agent first.
Beautiful-Lobotomy: So once you have an agent and write a hit song, are you going to be in the next big kids movie “have we reached our destination yet?
Inkspill: Hahaha I can’t say I wouldn’t. Whatever it takes to be able to wake up late and make songs I like. By the way, anyone who tells you otherwise is a goddamn liar.
